Damage to the 18 inch long bundle of nerves that connects the brain to the rest of the body.
Some injuries to the nerves occur outside of the spinal cord and affect the nerve roots and nerves as they travel to the arms and legs.
A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is disrupted. This could be due to a blockage or a rupture of a blood vessel.
